Tanzania to Begin Building First Berths of East Africa's Largest Port Next Month
"We welcome more local and international investors to join the project, which aims to bring major transformation to port operations in the country," Plasdus Mbossa, Director of the Tanzania Ports Authority, reportedly said at the signing ceremony of the memorandum of understanding with Africa Global Logistics.
ℹ Bagamoyo, located 75 km north of the port city of Dar es Salaam, was the site of a 2013 framework agreement between the Tanzanian government, China Merchants Group, and Oman's sovereign wealth fund to build a port, with contract negotiations concluding in 2021.
The project envisages the construction of 28 berths capable of accommodating vessels with a draft of up to 20 meters. Total investment in the project is reported to be $10 billion.
Construction of the first three berths is expected to be completed in early 2029.
Upon completion of construction, the Bagamoyo port is expected to become the largest in East Africa, surpassing Mombasa in neighboring Kenya. The port is also planned to be made the center of a special economic zone, where 700 manufacturing enterprises will be located.
