The US Department of State has announced it will conduct a “comprehensive review” of relations with Tanzania, citing alleged violations of freedoms and the use of force against civilians. Sixteen European countries have expressed “deep concern” over the post-election situation and called on Tanzania to “honor their obligations under international human rights law.” Earlier, the Tanzanian government strongly condemned Western countries for interfering in its internal affairs, including the European Union’s decision to discuss the situation in the country without Tanzania’s official participation. President Samia Suluhu Hassan stated that the violence of October 29 was part of an attempt to overthrow the government by force. She maintained that the use of force was proportionate to the level of the threat and was intended to protect citizens and preserve national stability.
