'Disturbing Trend' of Misconduct: Kenyan MPs Label Sound the Alarm Over British Military Presence

A parliamentary committee has reported a troubling pattern of sexual misconduct involving personnel from the British Army Training Unit Kenya (BATUK), including allegations of rape, assault, and the abandonment of children fathered by soldiers.

"BATUK is increasingly seen as an occupying presence rather than a development partner," the report stated.

The most prominent case involves the 2012 killing of 21-year-old Agnes Wanjiru near the British training camp in Nanyuki. After years of advocacy by Wanjiru’s family and Kenyan human rights groups, the suspect, British soldier Robert Purkiss, was arrested in the UK in November.
