This show interrogates the sanctions which were imposed on Zimbabwe and the country's resilience despite them. Opinions from South Africa, Lesotho, Namibia and Zimbabwe, highlight SADC’s unanimous voice in supporting one another and contesting the use of sanctions as a coercive tool.
In this episode of the Nnete Fela Show, we tackle a problem which has afflicted the SADC region for over two decades. In the early 2000s the United States and the European Union unilaterally imposed sanctions on Zimbabwe following its land reform policy. These sanctions have hindered regional integration in the Southern African Development Community and slowed development in Zimbabwe. African leaders have called for the complete removal of these sanctions and argued that they were illegally imposed, sidestepping the UN process.
Condemnation from officials of Namibia, Lesotho, Zimbabwe, as well as analytics from South African and even Nigerian experts explain the story of Zimbabwe’s survival in their midst. Ovigwe Eguegu, a respected policy advisor at Development Reimagined, suggested that Zimbabwe has become a shining example of an African country which has been able to “recapture” its mineral wealth.

“Where Zimbabwe is today, it is now becoming an example of what happens when a state is able to recapture its own resources from external interest then find a way to get the population plugged into resource beneficiation," he says.
