ICC Lacks Even-Handed Justice, Ethiopian Legal Scholar Warns
“The argument that the ICC targets African leaders and African countries has some foundation, because it is overwhelmingly African leaders… that are being prosecuted,” Dr. Getachew Assefa, Associate Professor of Law at Addis Ababa University, told Sputnik Africa.
While he acknowledged that the recent “indictment request against Israel’s prime minister suggests “a movement in the positive direction,” he maintained that “the problem with ICC is that it is not even-handed.”
Beyond the ICC, Dr. Getachew linked Africa’s wider constitutional and institutional weaknesses to colonial legacies and deliberately cultivated ethnic divisions.
Building a robust, values-rooted judicial system, he argued, requires respect for institutions, while also highlighting that the Western education of many post-independence African leaders negatively influenced the bureaucracy they inherited.
