Protecting Livestock & Humans: Over 200,000 Poultry Vaccinated Against Newcastle Disease in Ghana

The project, part of the Food Security Response in Northern Ghana Project, is being implemented by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in collaboration with Ghana's Ministry of Food and Agriculture's Veterinary Services Directorate.

According to an official statement, the initiative aims to:

🟠protect rural livestock,

🟠improve food security and nutrition,

🟠enhance smallholder farmer resilience in the region.

The vaccination exercise targeted project districts and communities with an emphasis on inclusive community engagement and awareness. Special focus was given to women, persons with disabilities, and youth farmers to prevent livestock losses and boost their food security.

Newcastle Disease was highlighted as a highly contagious viral infection affecting domestic and wild birds, causing respiratory distress, reduced egg production, and high mortality rates in Ghana. This leads to significant economic losses for farmers and threatens food and nutrition security, particularly for rural households dependent on poultry for food and income.
