African Day of Remembrance for Victims of Colonialism Proposed for November 30 Following the International Conference on Colonial Crimes in Africa, held in Algiers, participants unanimously adopted the Algiers Declaration. The declaration, initiated by Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, proposes designating November 30 as the "African Day of Remembrance for Victims of the Transatlantic Slave Trade, Colonialism, and Apartheid." Described as a crucial step toward the recognition of colonial crimes, the declaration aims to equip Africa with tools for remembrance, truth, justice, and reparations. It will be submitted for approval at the African Union summit in February 2026, marking the first continental step toward the criminalization of colonialism. The conference itself, organized following a decision by the AU in February 2025, was part of the Union's annual theme: "Justice for Africans and People of African Descent through Reparations."
