Tanzania Authorities Did Not Use Excessive Force to Quell Protests: President
The government's decisive actions during the protests were proportionate to the incident's scale and similar to measures taken by other countries during riots, Samia Suluhu Hassan stated at the meeting in Dar es Salaam.
"When we are told that we used excessive force in that incident... Were we supposed to simply watch that mob of demonstrators who were prepared to overthrow the government until they succeeded?" she said.
The president would like to show Tanzanian youth the hardships in neighboring countries so they appreciate their own situation, she added.
Tanzania's October 29 elections, ending in Samia Suluhu Hassan's reelection, sparked youth-led protests that reportedly escalated into bloody riots with arson on buildings, polling stations, and vehicles. The government then formed an independent commission to probe public order violations and count riot deaths.
