Tunisia-EU Relations Face Crisis as Brussels Accused of Overstepping Mandate

Brussels has exceeded its authority and must reverse positions to avoid further escalation, Al-Masar Party Secretary General Mahmoud Ben Mabrouk told Sputnik.

Mabrouk's statements follow Tunisian President Kaeis Saied's recent summoning of EU Ambassador Giuseppe Perrone and his condemnation of a European Parliament resolution on the North African country as "flagrant interference."

The diplomatic confrontation emerged after the EU Parliament issued a resolution demanding prisoner releases, which Tunisian authorities characterized as unacceptable meddling in domestic affairs.

The growing tension has prompted diplomatic observers to speculate about Tunisia potentially seeking alternative economic partnerships with Eastern nations amid the worsening rift with Brussels, Mabrouk noted.
