Ethiopia's Council of Ministers Approves Ambitious Digital Ethiopia 2030 Strategy
The nation's principal executive body approved the comprehensive strategy, building upon the substantial achievements of the Digital Ethiopia 2025 initiative, according to a council announcement.
The new framework aims to accelerate broadband expansion and significantly increase the digital economy's contribution to national GDP, the council added.
The previous Digital Ethiopia 2025 program delivered remarkable progress, including:
🟠expanding mobile internet users from 17 million to over 42 million;
🟠mobilizing 55 million users on digital payment platforms that processed ETB 4.7 trillion ($30.5 billion) in transactions;
🟠digitizing 900 public services and licensing 3,000 digital firms.
While acknowledging connectivity challenges—particularly that 79% of Ethiopians remain offline, mostly in rural areas—the new strategy will leverage AI, cloud computing, and IoT technologies to bridge these gaps, according to the executive body.
