Moving beyond symbolic participation, South-South collaboration has produced a pragmatic framework built on shared challenges and homegrown solutions, shifting the focus from aid-based dependency to dignified, collective problem-solving.
At the G20 in Johannesburg, Global South leadership played a decisive role in shaping the global agenda. Under host South Africa’s theme of “Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability,” the resulting declaration addressed systemic issues facing developing economies. It secured commitments to reform international financial institutions, tackle the debt crisis, and scale up climate finance. The summit also endorsed building value chains for critical minerals within resource-rich nations and unlocking concessional finance, aiming to break the cycle of raw-material dependency and high capital costs for countries in Africa and beyond.
Dr. Sandy Africa, Director of Research at the Institute for Strategic Reflection, South Africa, explained to African Currents how South Africa's G20 presidency advanced the priorities of Africa and the Global South, highlighting key outcomes and their implications for future multilateralism.

"I think that South Africa can take a bow because all went off quite well. And this was seen in the way in which the leaders who were present congratulated President Cyril Ramaphosa. But I'd say that the objective always was to ensure that the development goals of Africa and the Global South found expression in the agenda of the G20. And if you look at the way in which the summit agenda was framed, it's very clear that the priorities of Africa and the Global South were reflected," Dr. Africa expressed.
