Tanzania to Begin Construction of Major New Port This December
Bagamoyo port will reach depths of up to 20 meters and will be capable of accommodating larger ships than any other port in the eastern Africa region, chief government spokesperson Gerson Msigwa was quoted by a Western news outlet as saying.
“The port will be able to handle ships with a capacity of up to 25,000 containers,” he stated.
The Bagamayo port is part of a large special economic zone with industrial parks and transport links, a news outlet noted.
The construction will end a decade of delays caused by government objections to the initial contract terms with foreign developers, secured by an agreement in 2013, it added.
