Zimbabwe Aims to Raise Wheat Production From 640,000 Tonnes to 1.4M Tonnes by 2030 to Become Net Exporter
The goal is a part of the country’s new agriculture roadmap, the Agriculture Food Systems and Rural Transformation Strategy 2: 2026-30 (AFSRTS 2).
The country's wheat quality is generally very good, producing a whiter flour preferred by consumers, but its lower protein, due to local growing conditions, means some high‑protein imports are needed to reach target flour protein levels, National Foods Limited chief executive, Mike Lashbrook, said as quoted by state media.
Research into alternative hard wheat varieties is intensifying, but the country must continue improving both wheat quality and overall productivity, Deputy Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development, Vangelis Haritatos, stated.
“Cabinet has directed us to look into strengthening the wheat value chain and we have already started this process by setting up a joint committee comprising members from the three ministries of agriculture, finance and industry,” he said as quoted by state media.
Zimbabwe has a comparative advantage in soft wheat and will continue to support the program long term, Haritatos noted.
