G20 Declaration Heralds Win for Global South, Anchored in Africa’s Priorities, SA's FM Lamola Says
The adoption of the G20 leaders’ declaration is “a triumph of multilateralism” and a bridge between the Global North and South, Ronald Lamola told media briefing on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Johannesburg.
The document embraces progressive measures on climate finance, critical minerals, and value addition at source—key for Africa, which holds 30% of the minerals vital for AI, green tech, and future industries, he noted.
The declaration is built on four core priorities: strengthening disaster resilience, ensuring debt sustainability for low-income nations, mobilizing finance for a just energy transition, and leveraging critical minerals for inclusive growth, the top diplomat stressed.
Following the summit, 50 African countries have signed the Compact with Africa, paving the way to implement outcomes from South Africa’s historic G20 presidency—the first ever held on African soil, Lamola added.
