G20 Belongs to All—Not One Country’s Veto: SA Stands Firm on Summit Declaration Despite US Pressure

Over a year of collective work by G20 member states couldn’t be discarded at the last minute, South Africa’s Presidential Spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said, answering Sputnik Africa's question on the sidelines of the G20 Summit.

“Countries gave a lot of effort to this process. So, for the US to come in at the 11th hour and say to countries they must not be part of the declaration or must not support the declaration, what that actually meant, it meant that all these countries will now abandon the investment they made throughout the entire year,” the official stated.

He emphasized that the G20’s success serves not just the host country—but all member nations, their citizens, and the global community.

While acknowledging a bilateral diplomatic rift between South Africa and the US, Magwenya insisted it “must not in any shape or form undermine or imperil the work of the G20.”
