Africa CDC Unveils New Strategy for Health Sovereignty & Security: Agency Head
Africa must transition "from dependency to ownership" in global health systems, Africa CDC Director-General Dr. Jean Kaseya stated while launching the continent's renewed Health Security and Sovereignty Agenda.
The strategy addresses a 70% drop in external health aid since 2021 while disease outbreaks increased by over 40%.
The five-pillar approach focuses on:
🟠Reforming global health architecture with African leadership;
🟠Integrating pandemic prevention and response systems;
🟠Mobilizing sustainable financing through domestic resources and innovative mechanisms;
🟠Establishing a continent-wide digital health ecosystem;
🟠Advancing local manufacturing to produce 60% of medical needs by 2040.
"[This] agenda is non-negotiable," Kaseya emphasized, noting that health sovereignty signifies "a new model of partnership" where African nations define priorities.
The framework builds upon previous public health initiatives while adding critical digital transformation and governance components previously missing, he noted.
