The "Gabon Infini" plan will reportedly also encompass $94 million in donor funds, totaling $180 million over a 10-year period.
The plan is to fund new national parks, address elephant poaching, and enhance eco-tourism through a model called "Project Finance for Permanence". This approach links the release of funds to significant government policy changes.
The initiative secured "a decisive milestone" for Gabon's nature conservation agenda, Minister of Water and Forests Maurice Ntossui Allogo was quoted by a Western news agency as saying.
Gabon, a key ecological hub in the Congo Basin, is covered by nearly 90% intact tropical rainforest, hosting over half of the world’s African forest elephants and a quarter of western lowland gorillas.
