G20: Let the World Depend on Africa, Professor Says
Africa must add value to its mineral and natural resources so the continent, not foreign manufacturers, benefits from downstream processing, Professor Ronney Ncwadi, Full professor of Economics at Nelson Mandela University, South Africa, said.
"Let us do that thing locally in Africa and let the world depend on Africa," he told Sputnik Africa.
The era of top‑down approaches is over and negotiations should involve equal partners to tackle Africa’s and the world’s problems, he said, noting Africa now has that opportunity at the G20 table.
Ncwadi welcomed several African countries joining BRICS and said the G20 offers a unique forum for the African Union to engage with major BRICS members.
A just energy transition, combining natural gas and renewables, could enable Africa’s industrialization but will require massive climate‑related investment and stronger agricultural systems, including improved fertilizer supply chains, to safeguard food security, he noted.
Finally, Ncwadi called for debt relief, warning that high debt burdens divert much of any economic growth to repayments and leave too little for investment.
