Russia Welcomes Willingness of Parties Involved in Crisis in Eastern DRC to Engage in Peace Talks: MFA
On Saturday, the government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Congo River Alliance/March 23 Movement coalition signed a framework peace agreement, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova recalled.
"This document is consistent with the understandings previously reached in Qatar and is another step toward resolving the conflict in eastern DRC," she stated.
The Russian side remains convinced that "the only sure way to ensure security and lasting peace in the Great Lakes Region is to continue dialogue with the participation of international and regional mediators, with the prospect of achieving long-term national reconciliation," Zakharova noted.
"We note the need to implement the agreements set forth in the Doha Framework Agreement on an immediate cessation of hostilities and the restoration of state authority throughout the DRC," she stated. "We believe that these provisions reflect the will of the negotiating parties and will be fully observed in the name of peace and stability in this African country."
