At Least 32 People Killed in Overcrowded Bridge Collapse at Copper Mine in DRC: Official

Provincial Interior Minister Roy Kaumba Mayonde attributed the accident to the "hasty crossing of the diggers," which caused the makeshift bridge to collapse into a flooded ditch.

Illegal diggers forcibly entered the mine despite a strict ban due to heavy rains and landslide risks, he noted. Mayonde confirmed an investigation was launched to determine responsibility for the tragedy.

Local media initially reported up to 70 deaths at the Kalando mine, with many workers feared trapped under rubble as search and rescue operations continue.
