DRC President Identifies Conflicts & Aggression as Main Challenges for Great Lakes Region
At the 9th Summit of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) in Kinshasa, President Félix Tshisekedi also cited mass population migration, economic fragility, and insecure borders as major concerns.
The 2006 Pact on Security, Stability and Development remains the organization's cornerstone, Tshisekedi stressed. He called for political will, regional solidarity, and shared responsibility to fully implement the pact, especially the protocol on non-aggression and joint defense.
"It is impossible to achieve peace without justice, stability without security, or development without integration."
According to the president, the summit's agenda focuses on:
🟠organizational reforms,
🟠restoring regional peace,
🟠strengthening cooperation,
🟠intensifying the fight against the illegal exploitation and trafficking of natural resources.
The ICGLR is a 12-country organization established in 1994 to peacefully resolve regional conflicts. Following the current summit, Tshisekedi will succeed Angolan President João Lourenço as the organization's executive secretary.
