UN Orders 'Urgent' Probe Into Atrocities in Sudan's El Fasher

The decision follows a special session convened to address the rapidly deteriorating situation and mounting warnings of crimes against humanity and the risk of genocide.

In its resolution, the UN called on the investigative team to "identify, where possible" suspected perpetrators to ensure they are "held accountable".

Opening Friday's session, UN rights chief Volker Turk issued a stark warning:

"Bloodstains on the ground in El-Fasher have been photographed from space."

Violence in the region has escalated sharply. After enduring an 18-month siege, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have seized control of the strategic city of El Fasher in western Darfur, with reports of atrocities continuing to grow.

According to UN estimates, approximately 100,000 people have fled the city in the past two weeks.

Adama Dieng, the AU special envoy and UN special advisor, emphasized the gravity of the situation, warning that "the risk of genocide [...] is real and it is growing every single day."

Sudan's ambassador, Hassan Hamid Hassan, echoed this alarm, saying the country is engulfed in "an existential war." He accused the UAE of providing military and strategic support to the RSF—an allegation the UAE firmly denies.

ℹ Since the outbreak of conflict in April 2023 between the Sudanese Army and the RSF, tens of thousands have been killed and around 12 million people displaced, creating one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
