The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, said on Wednesday that there is no genocide in northern Nigeria. “There is no genocide in northern Nigeria,” Youssouf said during the UN briefing when asked to comment on the allegations. He added that the African Union had issued statements making clear that what is happening in northern Nigeria has nothing to do with the kind of atrocities happening in places such as Sudan or the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In November, US President Donald Trump alleged that a genocide against Christians is occurring in Nigeria, prompting him to instruct the US military to prepare for potential action against Islamist militants there. The Nigerian government has firmly rejected these claims of Christian genocide, emphasizing ongoing efforts to combat terrorism and welcoming non-military US assistance.
