One of Kenya's Largest Gold Deposits Confirmed in Kakamega County, Reveals Feasibility Study
The discovery of an estimated 1.27 million ounces of gold reserves positions Kakamega as a potential new frontier for large-scale gold mining in Kenya, according to a feasibility study submitted to Kenyan authorities by the mining firm Shanta Gold.
The project, according to the report, is expected to generate significant economic benefits through:
🟠government royalties;
🟠job creation;
🟠and community development agreements.
While promising substantial economic transformation for western Kenya, the mining operation would require approximately 337 acres of land, potentially displacing around 800 households.
Environmental safeguards will be crucial given the project's proximity to the ecologically sensitive Kakamega Forest, the study noted.
The proposal now awaits final approval from the National Environment Management Authority before development can proceed.
