Hundreds of Gold, Bronze Artifacts Returned to Ghana's Ashanti King From UK & Switzerland

King Osei Tutu II, the Ashanti monarch, has received a significant collection of royal artifacts repatriated from institutions abroad in a ceremony at the Manhyia Palace Museum in Kumasi.

The restitution included 130 items such as royal regalia, ceremonial drums, and gold weights. Most were previously held in the United Kingdom and Switzerland, notably by Geneva's Barbier-Mueller Museum.

This return is part of an ongoing effort, following the recovery of 67 other objects in 2024 alone from institutions including:

🟠The British Museum;

🟠The Victoria and Albert Museum in London;

🟠The Fowler Museum in Los Angeles.

The event highlights the continued, decades-long struggle by African nations to reclaim cultural heritage looted during the colonial era, a process where some European institutions still delay full restitution.
