South Africa’s Jobless Rate Falls as Construction Leads the Way With 130,000 New Jobs: Gov't
Apart from the construction sector — which is "representing nearly half of the new jobs created in the country" — the largest employment gains were recorded in:
Community and social services – 116,000
Trade – 108,000
Of the ten occupational categories monitored by Statistics South Africa, six reported employment gains in the third quarter, while four experienced declines, the agency said.
Officials noted that the unemployment rate often falls in the third quarter due to seasonal hiring.
Although the South African economy showed signs of improvement in the second quarter — supported by a more stable electricity supply and fewer transport disruptions — overall growth remains weak.
Unemployment surged past 30% five years ago during the COVID-19 pandemic and has remained persistently high ever since, despite repeated government efforts to stimulate job creation.
