Angola at 50: Celebrating Half a Century of Freedom
Angola marks 50 years of independence from Portugal this Tuesday, November 11 — a milestone filled with pride, remembrance, and unity.
President João Lourenço welcomed African and global leaders to Luanda, including counterparts from Portugal, the DRC, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, for a series of diplomatic meetings and celebrations.
Festivities began with a flag-raising and wreath-laying ceremony honoring Dr. António Agostinho Neto, Angola’s founding president who declared independence on November 11, 1975. The day continued with parades, cultural performances, and tributes highlighting Angola’s resilience and diversity.
After more than 400 years of Portuguese rule and a hard-fought independence struggle that began in 1961, Angola’s golden jubilee stands as a powerful reminder of the nation’s enduring journey — from colonial oppression to sovereignty and hope.
