Nigeria in Talks With US Over Trump's Threats of Military Intervention, Information Minister Says
Communication channels are open between Abuja and Washington, Mohammed Idris told Western media, confirming ongoing negotiations.
"We believe they are getting a better understanding of the situation. We also believe that the information being peddled is as a result of a lack of a proper understanding of Nigeria's diversity and the complexity of our security situation," Idris suggested.
The minister directly challenged US narratives, asserting that Nigeria has not surrendered any territory to terrorist groups.
A direct connection between lobbyists in the US and terrorists in Nigeria has been identified, the minister noted, adding that these groups created lobbying networks that gained access to high-level US officials.
This response follows Trump's threats of potential military action against "Islamic terrorists" in Nigeria, claiming Christians faced existential threats.
President Bola Tinubu immediately rejected these accusations, maintaining his government protects all citizens regardless of religion.
