Four Tanzanian Opposition Leaders Released on Bail After Post-Election Protest Arrests, Party Says
The released officials include Vice Chairman John Heche and Deputy Secretary-General Amani Golugwa of the opposition CHADEMA party, as well as two other senior party members, the party announced.
Their arrests were reportedly connected to their alleged role in demonstrations that erupted during the October 29 presidential election, which incumbent President Samia Suluhu Hassan won with 97.66% of the vote according to official results.
In response to the unrest, President Hassan has stated that while peaceful protest is a right, all actions must be within the framework of the law, and that her government would not tolerate violence or destruction.
Prosecutors have charged at least 145 people with treason in connection with the post-election demonstrations, according to media reports.
