Russian Forces Have Completely Liberated Eastern Part of Kupyansk in Kharkov Region, MoD Says

Why is the city so important?

The Russian Ministry of Defense describes it as a "logistical hub" for the Ukrainian army. It is key to controlling the eastern part of the Kharkov region. Kiev has transformed the city into a "fortress" with reinforced concrete structures and minefields.

According to the ministry, liberating Kupyansk will allow Russia to:

▪advance towards Izyum, Chuguyev and Volchansk settlements in the Kharkov region;
▪open a direct route to Slavyansk and Kramatorsk in the DPR, key for Ukrainian troops in the Donbass.

The Russian Defense Ministry earlier dismissed Zelensky’s claims of a “clearing” operation in Kupyansk as detached from reality, and stated encircled Ukrainian forces in Kupyansk and Krasnoarmeysk face worsening conditions and should surrender.
