Electoral Observation Becomes New Pillar in Rapidly Growing Russia-Tanzania Relationship: Russian Expert
The presence of a mission from the Russian Civic Chamber at Tanzania’s presidential election on October 29 is a strong signal, said Andrey Maslov, director of the Center for African Studies at Moscow’s prestigious Higher School of Economics.
"[It] demonstrates the level of trust placed in our electoral observation methodology," he told reporters, adding that it is also "a major step in the development of Russia-Tanzania relations, which are currently booming."
The expert also praised the maturity of the electoral process in Tanzania:
"On one hand, authorities did not succumb to radicalization or overreact to street violence, and on the other, the transparency of the entire electoral process is evident. Civil society, consisting of one million people, participated in organizing the process, making it very difficult to hide anything."
The presidential election took place in Tanzania on October 29. Incumbent President Samia Suluhu Hassan won the election with 97.66% of the vote.
