Ethiopia is betting big on its wildlife conservation, community tourism, and economic growth through travel. With new world-class facilities like the Adwa Victory Memorial and the Addis Africa International Conference venue combined with strong airline connectivity via Ethiopian Airlines, the future of African travel is taking shape in Addis Ababa.
Ethiopia is fast becoming Africa’s next hub for conference tourism, wildlife conservation, and ecological adventure. In an exclusive interview with Sputnik Africa, Ethiopia’s State Minister of Tourism, Sileshi Girma, laid out a bold vision that connects the past to a very green and prosperous future.
“Our focus used to be mainly on the historical sites, particularly on palace, museums or religious sites. But these days we still focus on those cultural and historic touristic products with the fact that these are our iconic and unique selling proposition from the global competition. But we still want to focus on the natural environment [...] Ethiopia has a lot to offer in the nature-based tourism segment, such as the Great Renaissance Dam [....] BRICS is a very important platform for us. In BRICS, we have Russia, we have India, and we have South Africa, Brazil, and others. So, in BRICS, we would find influential countries globally, and also good population, and also good economy at the same time, whereby we can make them our tourists. In the BRICS platform, as Ethiopia, we have already tried to claim a few things. One is, we have submitted our proposal to make Ethiopia be the center of tourism academy, [for] the BRICS countries to open a tourism academy in Ethiopia [...] But in general, we want Ethiopia to benefit from the BRICS strategic alliance,” the minister indicated.
