As the world’s economic and climate powers prepare to convene in the Global South for two pivotal summits, a leading African analyst has issued a stark warning that the regions must leverage this historic moment to move beyond symbolic rhetoric and secure binding, actionable outcomes that reshape an unjust global system.
The hosting of COP30 and the G20 Summit in Brazil and South Africa, respectively, represents a critical, symbolic juncture.
However, for this moment to be transformative, it must move beyond symbolism to a strategic, coordinated, and self-authored assertion of power by the Global South. The goal is not to reject the existing global system but to redesign and rebalance it, shifting from dependence and reaction to ownership and proactive agenda-setting.
African Currents spoke with Dr. Margaret Monyani, founder of OLAM Africa, on how hosting the COP30 and G20 summits allows the Global South to leverage its influence and reshape the global agenda for greater equity.

"We see the political division internationally [...]. The international system is economically fragile. And also environmentally on the edge [...]. [The Global] South isn't speaking from theory. These conversations have to be spoken from lived experience. And I think that's one starting point. So for Brazil and the [Global] South, you know, COP30 is a chance to show that development and conservation don't have to be opposites [...]. The South-South collaboration isn't about ideology. It's about survival with dignity, because our context is very different. So when we talk about South-South cooperation, we are not talking about abstract diplomacy. We are talking about shared problem solving," Dr. Monyani said.
