Two Foreigners Suspected of Attempted Coup in Madagascar Arrested, Official Says
The suspects are economic operators who have resided on the island for more than five years, senior police officer Rufin Tolojara Lebiria stated.
"The two suspects are foreigners; they are neither Europeans nor Indo-Pakistanis," he added.
During a search of a large property owned by one of them, 2 billion ariary (about $440,000) in cash, some foreign currency bills, "three powerful hunting rifles, and three automatic pistols" were discovered, Lebiria said.
These arrests are part of an investigation launched on the basis of "reliable intelligence" regarding a direct threat against the President of the Re-foundation, Michael Randrianirina.
Authorities say they have foiled an assassination and government destabilization plot allegedly organized from abroad. A second group of three suspects is still being tracked down.
