Zimbabwe Achieves Record 640,000-Tonne Harvest, Poised to Become Regional Wheat Hub
The success stemmed from:
🟠timely input distribution,
🟠improved irrigation,
🟠mechanization,
🟠expanded participation.
Higher-than-anticipated yields were reported from over 124,000 hectares of wheat, according to Agriculture Permanent Secretary Professor Obert Jiri.
The resulting surplus, with national consumption only at 360,000 tonnes, will allow Zimbabwe to explore export markets, positioning it as Southern Africa's wheat hub, capable of contributing to regional food security, he added.
Jiri highlighted the integral role of smallholder farmers, transformed into major contributors and experts in winter wheat through support programs and joint ventures, ensuring sustainable and inclusive growth.
