South Africa Boosts Vaccine Production Leadership With New Cape Town Lab
The new state-of-the-art laboratory, inaugurated by South African company Biovac, will develop and manufacture messenger RNA vaccines, along with cell and bacterial cultures.
The center aims to:
🟠Combat diseases prevalent across the continent
🟠Promote local innovation
🟠Develop intellectual property
"[This laboratory] gives us the capability to develop and test next-generation vaccines using the most advanced technology available, ensuring that Africa is not left behind in responding to current and future vaccine-preventable diseases," said Biovac CEO Morena Makhoana.
The initiative supports the African Union's goal to increase the share of vaccines produced locally from 1% to 60% by 2040.
