Ethiopia and Russia to Sign WTO Accession Protocol Next Week: Minister

During a visit to Ethiopia on Wednesday, the Russian delegation, led by Maxim Oreshkin, Deputy Head of the Executive Office of the President of Russia, held productive discussions on strengthening trade and economic ties between the two countries.

Negotiations were held with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, Minister of Finance Ahmed Shide, Governor of the National Bank of Ethiopia Eyob Tekalign, and Foreign Minister Gedion Timotheos.

Key Highlights:

Trade Growth: The trade turnover between Russia and Ethiopia increased significantly, with a threefold rise in the first eight months of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024. The majority of bilateral trade in 2025 consists of fertilizer supplies.

Strategic Partnership: Russia regards Ethiopia as a key partner in Africa and aims to further deepen bilateral cooperation.

Coffee Trade: The volume of Ethiopian coffee exports to Russia has continued to grow, with a 60% increase in 2024 alone.

Sectoral Cooperation: Russia has expressed interest in expanding cooperation with Ethiopia in the engineering and automotive sectors, as well as in other industries.

Future Potential: There is significant potential for Ethiopia to increase exports to Russia, both in terms of quality and quantity, across various sectors.

Expanded Cooperation: Russia is also keen on enhancing collaboration in agriculture, industry, energy, humanitarian efforts, and information technology.

The Ethiopian delegation is expected to visit Moscow from November 10-12 for the next meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission, where further joint initiatives are expected to be discussed, according to the Russian Ministry of Economic Development.
