Zimbabwe Calls for Global Financial Reform at Doha Summit, Announces UN Security Council Bid

"Sustainable development cannot thrive in an unequal global order," President Emmerson Mnangagwa said at the Second World Summit for Social Development in Doha, Qatar.

The Zimbabwean leader urged the global community to match rhetoric with tangible action and called for the Doha Declaration to "reignite hope for justice, dignity, and inclusion for all peoples of the world."

Debt distress, climate change, and the removal of unilateral coercive measures are urgent issues needing address to ensure fair participation for developing nations, Mnangagwa emphasized.

Alongside this global critique, the president outlined domestic progress, noting that Zimbabwe's poverty rate has dropped from 62% in 1995 to 38%, and life expectancy has risen from 44 to 65 years as a result of national development strategies.

Concluding with Zimbabwe's philosophy of being "a friend to all and an enemy to none," Mnangagwa formally announced the country's candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2027-2028 term.
