South Africa’s Unity Government Gains Momentum, Vows Swift Delivery on Key Priorities, Presidency Says
“The GNU [Government of National Unity] is now more cohesive, determined and focused than ever before,” the presidency said in a statement after a two-day retreat of the 10-party GNU leaders.
According to the statement, since its launch 16 months ago, the GNU has:
🟠Launched reforms in energy, logistics, telecoms, water, and visas to drive inclusive growth;
🟠Started a major infrastructure build-and-maintenance drive;
🟠Expanded public employment for youth and supported poor households despite tight budgets;
🟠Achieved macroeconomic stability, a primary budget surplus, and pursued debt reduction;
🟠Advanced anti-corruption efforts, helping remove South Africa from the FATF grey list;
🟠Strengthened regional and global diplomacy, including during its G20 Presidency under the theme “Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability.”
Party leaders agreed to accelerate action in key areas: food security, youth skills and jobs, fighting crime, fixing failing municipalities, managing borders, and professionalizing the public service.
All parties reaffirmed full commitment to the GNU—“an instrument to advance the interests of all South Africans.”
