Washington Not Ruling Out Possibility of Sending US Troops to Nigeria, Says Trump
"Could be ... I envisage a lot of things. They are killing record numbers of Christians in Nigeria," Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One.
On Saturday, the president said that he will instruct the Pentagon to prepare for a possible attack in the African country to "wipe out Islamic terrorists." He added that the US will also immediately cease all aid to Nigeria if the killing of Christians continues.
Earlier, Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth said that the department, following Trump's order, was preparing for action against Nigeria.
Amid allegations of a Christian genocide in Nigeria, Abuja acknowledged the country's security challenges, but asserted that Christians are not specifically targeted and calls for respect as it combats insecurity.
President Bola Tinubu and Trump might meet next week at the White House or in Nigeria to discuss the situation surrounding the protection of Christians from terrorist attacks, according to the Nigerian presidency.
