Global tech investors are betting big on Nigeria’s digital future, pouring billions of dollars into advanced data centers as the country’s cloud market grows.
Nigeria is emerging as a major hub for AI and digital infrastructure, attracting nearly $1 billion in investments from global and regional operators to build next-generation data centers capable of advanced computing and supporting the country’s rapidly growing online population. The market for internet-based computing services is expanding at roughly 26 percent annually, with its value projected to rise from $1.03 billion today to $3.28 billion by 2030. Fueled by a young, mobile-first population, these investments are driving innovation, with operators developing solutions to ensure reliable power and expand internet access beyond major cities—laying the groundwork for a nationwide digital network. With continued infrastructure improvements and talent development, Nigeria is poised to become Africa’s leading hub for AI and data-driven growth. In an interview with African Currents, Dr. Krishnan Ranganath, Regional Executive for West Africa at Africa Data Centres, highlighted how Nigeria’s growing investments and the interest of international investors in data centers and digital infrastructure could position the country as a key digital hub, while also promoting economic growth and digital sovereignty.Want to hear more from our guest? With continued infrastructure improvements and talent development, Nigeria is poised to become Africa’s leading hub for AI and data-driven growth.
In an interview with African Currents, Dr. Krishnan Ranganath, Regional Executive for West Africa at Africa Data Centres, highlighted how Nigeria’s growing investments and the interest of international investors in data centers and digital infrastructure could position the country as a key digital hub, while also promoting economic growth and digital sovereignty.
"Every country should have the needed ICT infrastructure to maintain its sovereignty. And it's high time that we in Africa[...] to minimize {our dependency} so that we have a better quality of infrastructure available in Africa, built in Africa for our people here [...]. A lot of homegrown platforms, technologies are coming up. Lagos is known as the fintech capital of Africa [...]. Nigeria, we know we have a NDPC, Nigerian Data Protection Commission. The NDPR Act [officially the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA) 2023]. Lot of other countries are looking up to that, why? The quality of the output of that act or that guidance on data protection is valued by others," Dr. Ranganath said.
