Russian folk is the voice of the land itself—born in small villages, carried through celebrations, work, and family life. Instruments like the balalaika and gusli add playful rhythm. Today, legends like Nadezhda Babkina keep these traditions alive on the world stage, showing that Russian folk is a living, breathing cultural treasure.
Russian folk tradition was born from ordinary life, and every folk song holds a piece of the nation’s past. To preserve this heritage is to safeguard identity, said Nadezhda Babkina, People’s Artist of Russia, cultural icon, folk singer, and a woman who has been preserving Russian folk music and traditions for decades. In her view, folk culture constitutes an essential component of national identity, and efforts to prohibit Russian culture are inherently ineffective, as culture is embedded in the consciousness of the people.Addittionaly, the singer expressed deep admiration for African culture and emphasized that the fusion of Russian folk and African traditional music holds strong potential for creating highly expressive and compelling musical compositions.Discover more insights from our outstanding guest on the Russian Essence podcast, proudly brought to you by Sputnik Africa. You can find our episodes not just on the website but also on Telegram.► Check out all the episodes of the Russian Essence Podcast.► You can also listen to our podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Castbox, Pocket Casts, Deezer, Podcast Addict and Afripods.

'Culture Cannot Be Banned': A Legendary Singer on the Invincible Spirit of Russian Folk

"Russian culture grew from the earth itself—from the hands that planted, harvested, prayed, and sang. In every song, there is life. Folk culture is a treasure; if we don’t protect it, we lose not just music—we lose our memory, our roots, ourselves," Babkina explained.
In her view, folk culture constitutes an essential component of national identity, and efforts to prohibit Russian culture are inherently ineffective, as culture is embedded in the consciousness of the people.
"Culture itself cannot be banned. Words might attempt it, but you cannot cut it out, ban it, or change it. It always retains its meaning," Babkina pointed out.
Addittionaly, the singer expressed deep admiration for African culture and emphasized that the fusion of Russian folk and African traditional music holds strong potential for creating highly expressive and compelling musical compositions.
"Regarding African culture, we've visited [the continent]. I'm always intrigued by what I’ll never be able to do myself, yet I find it fascinating and intriguing. I love the clothing and the elegance of the women, who appear as if they are glistening, adorned with all sorts of beads and rings. I adore it. It's something I find incredibly captivating." she said.
