South African Court Urges to Consider Export of Rhino Horns From Conservation Breeders
The High Court of the Northern Cape province held that the current national legislation and international conventions do not entirely prohibit trade in rhino horns, according to a local news portal.
Existing laws allow the sale of endangered species if they are bred in captivity for conservation or other non-commercial purposes, which applies fully to rhino horns, a news outlet quoted Judge Pule Tlaletsi as saying.
Rhino horns can be exported without requiring import permits from the recipient country, he noted.
Farmers and reserve managers are urging the government to legalize exports, as they have accumulated large stockpiles of horns; for instance, Platinum Rhino farm, home to around 2,000 rhinos, has accumulated 9 tons of horns.
South Africa currently has more than 16,000 rhinos, the largest population in the world, a news portal added.
