First in Africa and Second in the World: Ethiopia Achieves Historic Intrauterine Blood Transfusion Feat
Ethiopia has successfully delivered a baby who received a total of 10 blood transfusions while still in the womb, local media reported. This rare medical procedure, performed at a hospital in Addis Ababa, is only the second of its kind in global medical history.
The mother, 28-year-old Senait Tamrat, faced immense anxiety after losing a previous child to rhesus incompatibility. When she was referred to the medical center at 21 weeks pregnant, specialists discovered her fetus was severely anemic due to the same condition.
Despite the complex nature of treating such a tiny fetus, intrauterine blood transfusion was deemed the only viable option for survival.
With continuous medical care, the baby received blood transfusions up to 10 times over several months. As a result, the fetus grew stronger and was delivered safely via surgery at 38 weeks, weighing 3.5 kg—an extraordinary outcome considering the risks involved. Both mother and child are now in good health, according to reports.
