Côte d'Ivoire's Independent Electoral Commission President Calls for Its Dissolution
A thorough overhaul is necessary, potentially leading to the institution's complete abolition, Ibrahime Coulibaly-Kuibiert said.
He believes that organizing elections should be entrusted to an alternative body. Coulibaly-Kuibiert suggested the legislative elections scheduled for December could be the last overseen by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).
"To preserve peace in Ivory Coast, a new format is needed."
ℹ The idea of dissolving the IEC is not new. With each election, the institution faces intense criticism and accusations of bias in favor of the ruling party, as noted by the local press. During the presidential election of October 25, the opposition demanded its abolition and called for its representatives to withdraw from the body.
