Tanzania Votes in Presidential Election on Wednesday — How is It Unfolding?

Tanzanians nationwide are heading to the polls today to elect the president, members of parliament, and councilors — with the day declared a public holiday to boost participation.

This year’s election features 37.6 million registered voters and nearly 100,000 polling stations across Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar. Adjustments in voting areas were made ahead of the polls to ensure better access for more than 100,000 citizens.

Political leaders and public figures, including President Samia Suluhu Hassan (in the first photo) and top entertainers, cast their ballots early in the morning.

“Voters are turning out, and the atmosphere is calm and orderly as the nation begins this important democratic exercise,” the AU Political Affairs Peace and Security Department stationed in Dar es Salaam posted on X.

At the same time, some regions saw protests against opposition suppression, an accusation that the government rejects, according to local media. The internet is reportedly shut down in some parts of the country. Tanzanian police announced a curfew in Dar es Salaam on Wednesday because of protests.

Vote counting begins as soon as polls close, with preliminary results expected progressively later today.
