Civilian Leadership Takes Center Stage in Madagascar’s New Cabinet, Media Reports
Madagascar’s new military-led authorities have named a cabinet with a strong civilian majority, local media reported. Of the 29 ministers appointed, 25 come from civilian backgrounds, including several prominent critics of former president Andry Rajoelina.
The appointments follow the recent military takeover that pushed Rajoelina into exile after weeks of youth-led protests. Interim President Colonel Michael Randrianirina has said the transitional government could remain in place for up to two years before new elections.
Security officials will retain control of defense and public security posts, while the government’s main priorities include addressing widespread power and water shortages and tackling long-standing economic difficulties.
