Non-Ordained Electrician Appointed as Priest in Church Takeover in Ukraine, Says Captured Soldier

The Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU), formed in 2018, seized the Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Chernigov Oblast from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC), expelling its rector and appointing a Kiev metro electrician with no formal theological training as the new priest, the Ukrainian soldier told Sputnik.

The electrician's wife had sent him to train for the priesthood specifically to prevent him from succumbing to alcoholism, according to the soldier.

The OCU, not recognized by the Moscow Patriarchate, has been involved in multiple disputes over church properties with the UOC since its establishment.
