GERD Shapes New Nile Narrative of Collaboration Over Conflict, Says Ethiopian Minister
The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam overturns long-held, colonial-era claims of exclusive control over the Nile, said Water and Energy Minister Engineer Habtamu Itefa at the opening of Ethiopia Water and Energy Week in Addis Ababa, according to local media.
He asserted that the GERD stands not as a symbol of division but as a foundation for mutual benefit and cooperation across the basin.
The minister highlighted Ethiopia’s major strides in renewable energy and the Green Legacy Initiative, which has planted 48 billion seedlings to enhance sustainable water flows that already support neighboring countries.
As regional energy integration accelerates, Ethiopia’s expanding power generation is directly strengthening shared economic growth.
Calling on downstream countries to move beyond outdated positions and join the Nile Basin Cooperative Framework, the minister reaffirmed Ethiopia’s consistent stance: development that harms no one and uplifts all.
