Post-Election Tension Ignites Several Cities in Cameroon
Demonstrations and riots broke out across the country, just a few hours after the official confirmation of incumbent President Paul Biya's victory.
A video circulating on social media allegedly shows the burning house of Denise Fampou, mayor of the second district of Douala.
The New Bell neighborhood of the city appears to be under blockade this Tuesday, according to media reports. Numerous police and gendarmerie patrols are moving through the streets of the area.
Clashes occurred in Bonabéri, in the fourth district of Douala, on Monday, where gunshots were heard, media reports.
Confrontations also broke out in Garoua, a city in the north of the country, between supporters of Issa Tchiroma and security forces. Clashes were reported around the home of the opposition candidate who claims victory.
Serious incidents were reported in the locality of Manjou. Public buildings were burned and vandalized, including the local office of the Electoral Council.
According to Constitutional Council data, Paul Biya won the election with 53.66% of the vote. Issa Tchiroma Bakary came in second with 35.19% of the votes.
